Tradition of touching the Bear and Strawberry Tree statue in Madrid

Why does everyone in Madrid play the Bear in Puerta del Sol?

3 Dec, 2025

Madrid's Puerta del Sol is a place full of traditions. Every year, thousands of people eat the 12 grapes in front of the clock of the Real Casa de Correos, and the square is also home to another much more peculiar custom linked to the statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree, which attracts many curious visitors.

Puerta del Sol

The Puerta del Sol is one of the best-known squares in Madrid and one of the most visited spots by tourists and residents alike. Located in the centre of the city, it functions as an important communication node and as a historical, cultural and social reference point, as we explain in detail in our 2-day guide to Madrid.

Its origins date back to the 15th century, when it formed part of the city wall and faced east, hence its name. Over time, the area has been transformed into the open square we know today.

One of its most prominent elements is the Kilometre Zero, The "El Pilar", a plaque on the ground that marks the beginning of Spain's radial roads. This point is particularly popular with visitors and is often considered the symbolic centre of the country.

There is also the Real Casa de Correos, The Clock Tower, a historic building that currently houses the headquarters of the Government of the Community of Madrid. Its clock takes centre stage every December 31st during the New Year's Eve chimes.

But in addition, in this neuralgic point of the city you can find one of the most photographed icons of Madrid: the statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree, The official symbol of the capital and the scene of a curious ritual that attracts more and more visitors.

Touching the Bear and Strawberry Tree statue

If you look closely, you will notice that the imposing bronze statue has a polished backside, with a golden sheen that gives away the fact that touching the bear's tail is now a tradition.

So now you know, when you find yourself in front of him, don't think about it. Join the tradition and shake hands with him. All in all, a little extra luck never hurts.
