Travelling to Santiago de Compostela? Everything you need to know about the new tourist tax

From 1 October, Santiago de Compostela joined other major European cities with the introduction of a tourist tax. Far from being a simple charge, this measure is born with a clear purpose: to protect the beauty and heritage of a World Heritage City, making the visitor part of its care. We explain in simple terms everything you need to know so that you can plan your trip without surprises.

Why a tourist tax in Santiago de Compostela?

At the heart of this initiative is the future of Santiago. 80% of all proceeds will go towards financing sustainable tourism actions. This means that your visit contributes directly to the conservation of its monuments, to the improvement of services and to ensuring that Compostela remains a magical and welcoming destination for future generations of travellers and pilgrims. Your stay becomes a gesture of support for the city.

How much will it cost? Details of the rates per stay

The contribution varies according to the category of your accommodation and, very importantly, only applies for a maximum of five nights. If your stay is longer, from the sixth night onwards, no charge will be applied.

The rates per person per day are as follows:

  • 2,50 euros: 5-star superior, 5-star and 4-star superior hotels
  • 2,00 euros: 4-star, 3-star Superior, 3-star and 2-star Superior hotels
  • 1,50 euros: 2-star, 1-star superior and 1-star hotels, as well as guesthouses.
  • 1 euro: Hostels, tourist camps, rural tourism, tourist flats and tourist accommodation.

Who is exempt from paying?

The regulations provide for a number of exemptions for special situations. The most important of these are:

  • Unemancipated minors.
  • People with a disability equal to or greater than 65%.
