The municipality is part of the Bay of Cádiz Natural Park and encompasses marshes, dunes, and highly attractive beaches. Transformed into salt flats and fish farms, these areas have retained significant natural value. In 1729, following its incorporation into the Crown and the arrival of military enclaves, the Military Settlement of San Carlos was established, increasing its importance as a military stronghold. Consequently, it preserves many historical buildings from that era, such as the Pantheon of Illustrious Sailors, the Main Church, the Royal Institute and Observatory of the Navy, and the Town Hall.
